Letter from Listeners:

  • Matt - Had rye grass that died and now his Bermuda grass won't come in.

Recommendation - He waited too long to transition. Mulch the areas that are bare, lightly scuff up the ground for better root contact. Be careful not to scuff to deep. He'll need to water more frequently to make up for the damage already done.

  • William - He'd like to build some raised planters for his mother and he's fairly handy. What materials would we recommend?

Recommendation - In the Arizona sun, we recommend going to Belgard's website and using retaining walls! Wood deteriorates too quickly here. Visit Flower Street Urban Gardens for other options too.

  • Karen - Just moved into a new home and the backyard is empty. She wants designs for a hot tub, mist system and raised planters.
Recommendation - Call Bill at Think Green Irrigation and Landscaping! She has her wishlist and it's time to take action. Call Bill at 480-922-9497 if you're in the Valley!

If you're in Tucson, call the Magic Garden Nursery & Landscaping and in Northern Arizona, it's Vicente Landscaping.

Callers:

  • Barry - Is there a product he can treat his dying tree with to make it easier to pull out is his roots out?
Recommendation - Call an arborist....here Phoenix, it's Integrity Tree Service

  • David - He just bought a house and wants to put in a few cottonwood trees around his house. Are cottonwood's a tree that needs to be planted further from the house?
Recommendation - Cottonwood's are pretty big trees and need to be planted further away...we'd go with an Indian Rosewood or a Sissou...maybe a Chinese Elm. Visit A & P Nursery to find a few ideas.

Segment 4 (running time 6:48)

Callers:

  • Margaret - Her daughter just moved into a new home. She has a square, unused backyard...where does she start?
Recommendation - Start a wishlist. Do you want grass? Shade? Patio? Are you a gardener? Do your research and fit the landscape to your lifestyle!  Try the Desert Botanical Gardens or the Boyd Thompson Arboretum.

  • Mike - He has two oleanders that are 20 feet tall and wants to get rid of them!
Recommendation - This is a huge chore and power tools are almost a must! Rent power tools to save your back or hire a pro. The root ball could definitely do some damage.
