HOW CAN I REMOVE AND PREVENT LIME SCALE?

If your kitchen and bathroom faucets have collected a scaly white residue around the rims, Arizona’s “hard water” has formed lime scale in your plumbing system.

It’s an ugly, hardened mess, but it’s pretty easy to clean off. All you’ll need is some white vinegar.

  • To remove lime scale from the inside edges of faucets and around sink and bathtub drains: Soak a few cotton balls with vinegar and wedge them into the faucet and around the dirty drains. Leave them there for at least an hour. The lime scale should easily wipe away.
  • If you find lime scale in your tea kettle, pour in half a cup of white vinegar and half a cup of water and bring to a boil. Let it sit overnight. The next morning, the lime scale will rinse away.
  • Similarly, you can rid your toilet bowl of lime scale by pouring in half a cup of vinegar and half a cup of borax. Let the mixture sit overnight. You’ll be able to scrub away the lime scale in the morning.
  • In the shower, scrub the tiles with straight vinegar, and then rinse with soap and water.

Then, to prevent the lime scale from returning, your best bet is to install a mechanical water softener. The water softener will neutralize the chemicals in “hard water” that cause lime scale.
