WHAT ARE THE BEST TIME(S) OF THE YEAR TO FERTILIZE CITRUS?

Best practices by industry experts encourage fertalizing citrus in early spring (February/March) after the last chance of frost, late spring (April/May) before the heat of summer, and in late summer (August/September).

There are three holidays Arizonan’s use as reminders:

  • Valentine’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day

In most homeowner applications we like granular fertilizers for slow release. Follow the labeled directions for application amount based on tree size and water in the fertilizer to activate. If there is rain in the forecast try timing your application ahead of the rain and let nature do the watering work.

There is another theory many follow of fertilizing less, but more often. For example, instead of applying one pound of fertilizer, three times a year; you would apply two-thirds of a pound, five times a year. I don’t know that there is any evidence of one method being better than the other, just be consistent year after year.###
