How can I clean my house without chemical cleaners?

Do what your grandma did: Make your own cleaners using ingredients from your kitchen.

Before store shelves were filled with chemical-strength cleaners, everybody cleaned the windows with a mix of white vinegar and water.   Other easy-to-make, nontoxic cleaning potions:

  • Add a drizzle of water to baking soda to make a slightly abrasive paste for scrubbing pots and pans, sinks and bathtubs.
  • For truly tough stains, she might have mixed a pinch of coarse salt into the paste.
  • Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice in a cupful of cooking oil and use the mix to polish furniture.
  • Rely on nature-made borax to whiten clothes—and skip the bleach.
