2008 Handiest Woman Contest Winner - Brick Driveway
Dear Rosie and Romey,I live in a historic home in Phoenix. All of us who have had granite driveways forever, received a letter from City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services informing us we were in violation of code and due to dust abatement issues we must do something with our driveways. My neighbor across the street spent a great deal of money putting in a brick driveway and I watched her bricklayer with a great deal of interest. I decided it is not rocket science and decided to tackle it myself. (All 110 lbs and 5ft 2 inches of my little "Cajun" me!)
I found a nice red brick (not a paver) for 25 cents apiece. I purchased a level, some string for a straight line, some metal stakes, a rubber mallet and some two by fours. I visited a sand and gravel business and picked up a couple loads of sand with a borrowed truck. The neighbors watched with a great deal of amusement as I piled my tools, books and with a worried look, walked around scratching my head wondering what have I gotten myself into? I could only do a few feet at a time but by gosh I did it! Its nothing fancy but suits my simple little home and I am pretty proud of my self. Please consider my effort for your handywoman contest.
