What are Rosie’s general guidelines for choosing a pool deck surface?

Whichever deck covering you choose, keep a few simple guidelines in mind:

The lighter your deck’s color, the cooler it will be. That’s why so many pool decks are sand- or buff-colored. Dark surfaces can look nice, but your feet will regret that choice on our first 100-degree day.
If you want Kool Deck, make sure that’s what you’re getting. Kool Deck has become synonymous with “pool deck,” just as Kleenex has become just another word for “tissue.” Kool Deck is a brand name.

How can I keep my pool deck looking nice?

Cover frequently traveled areas of the pool deck with no-slip mats to prevent wear and tear.
Keep metal furniture off of the pool deck. Rust stains from metal chairs can stain your acrylic or Kool Deck pool deck.
Clean your pool deck frequently with a leaf blower or hose.

I never use my swimming pool. Is there a way to cover it permanently?

It’s not a good idea to fill in or permanently cover an old swimming pool. A better solution is to build a temporary deck over your swimming pool so you can remove it if you decide to sell your home later. A pool can add value to your home.

Plus, if you fill in a pool and hide it under the dirt, you must disclose that fact when you sell your home. And the excavation costs for a new pool in the location where the old one was could be astronomical.
